Sam - Make Five ROCKS 11/26/08 10:0AM #
Been on it for about 5 months now and I am still addicted. CHECK IT.

I don't get it... it this like My Fav 5? What's the point? How about sharing to Facebook? Where's the revenue?
Eric Karjaluoto 12/13/08 12:14PM #
Hi Dan, Yes. It is a place for people to post their "top fives". The point of it all is to share what you’re interested in. Sometimes this means finding a weird list that's funny, and on other occasions it's more practical. That being said, most of our users seem to use it for entertainment purposes. The revenue is initially ad based. We'll build contests and activities around specific brands, allowing them to engage users. Here’s a potential example: a user-generated art contest sponsored by Absolut, in which people can create and upload concept artwork for an advertisement. Others could then vote on their favorites, with the top five winning some sort of prize furnished by the sponsoring brand.

The nice part is that while we tend to glaze over advertising on most social networks, here we can stitch ads directly into content that is of interest to visitors. Additionally, as we add local search features, we’ll allow operators (i.e. restaurants) to buy extended listings, allowing them to feature their menus and such. But don't take my word for it. Take someone like Sam's (above). He's often logged-in for hours at a time. Ask him why he keeps coming back--that would likely be more telling of why it works. Or, even better yet, sign-up for an account and try it out. I can explain why it works, but that's less compelling than experiencing it for yourself. :-)

BTW - There is Facebook integration. You can share content from any page, or you can install the Facebook app, which allows you to share your actions on the site in your profile. (Oh yes, and we're also adding a widget so that you can share content on your website/blog.)

As a member of makefive for a little over a year, i can tell you -- it is addictive, I'm still an active member. I think right now there's almost 2,000 topics; yet, there seems to be very little duplication (makefive seems to have hit upon a good flagging system that alerts us to possible dupe topics, which, as a user, is great). I like to see where people's heads are at with the kinds of topics they post, their choices ... as well as opportunity to comment back and forth especially if a nerve is struck. And I think it's a relatively honest and engaged community: desirable for any marketer.

As with every other company, the first comment is a shill.
Eric Karjaluoto 12/19/08 7:55AM #
That's untrue Leo. This isn't vaporware and we have no need to pretend. Here's a link to Sam's profile: http://www.makefive.com/people/webdesign and here's a link to Doreen's: http://www.makefive.com/people/doefromto -- but don't take my word for it. Email them and ask what they think.

BTW - We just added this. Kind of a neat feature: http://www.makefive.com/help/widget

Eirc, There is this book called 'Click' by Bill Tancer <br> http://tinyurl.com/a3kvck There is a chapter on Super connectors. If you actually got a super connector then *maybe* you wouldn't have to work so hard
